2013, I took a year out after high school to try and develop an idea of what I should do with the rest of my life. I didn’t know what to do in those months but an opportunity arose to participate in a discipleship gap-year program and God said, “Go for it!” He told me to chase after him, discover His heart for me and listen to His calling on my life. It was a difficult step to take but in the end, I realised I had never been more certain about a decision as I was when I made that one.
In the two years that I took out for the gap-year program, I learned more than I could possibly ever imagine and I am incredibly thankful for so many different aspects of that season.
I am thankful for the people who walked alongside me, invested in me as an individual and who have equipped me, encouraged me and then released me into new ministry opportunities.
I’m thankful for the deepening of my relationship with God, that I can call him Father and further understand what it means to be His child.
I am thankful for the opportunities I had to be out on mission in both local and global contexts. I ran a missional community for university students that were encouraged to reach out to their flatmates and classmates and bring them in to our ‘family’ relational time where we would eat food, have campfires, play games and worship God together as one body. I went away on three international mission trips to Northern Ireland, Italy and Romania. We were stretched, challenged and pushed out of our comfort zones in each of those locations and through our struggles we could all hear God’s voice shepherding us and cheering us on.
I was welcomed in to an incredible community and I was sent out with a strong understanding of who I am and what God is calling me into for my future.
Are you searching for a deeper relationship with God, looking to explore the character of God, and seeking to learn who you are?
Do you feel called to be a leader and are not sure how to approach that calling and are you passionate about seeing the lost find Jesus?
Even if you answered ‘no’ I strongly encourage you to pray about whether you should dedicate a year to exploring these areas, going on mission trips and searching for God’s voice together with a family of others on the same journey.
